One of the courses I did at CTEC in Dayton (I think in 1979), was building a small computer called the "number cruncher" which taught the basics of such a device. It had a few chips, a small number display and you could control the clock speed. I have been looking for the schematics to try a build one for my kids but without luck. Does anybody still have some information about that class and/or device? I remember that when we gave a correct answer or did good on a test, or something, the instructor would give us a stamp on our paperwork saying "mother will be pleased". That was a fun class and very educational.
