Title: Eleven Item Logic Test NCR gave to new hires
Post by: jswallow on January 18, 2007, 09:33:59 pm
Hi, I have been looking for a copy of the logic test that NCR used to determine if you were suitable to work in the data processing field. Back in the 60's most people wanted people with a background in mathematics and I tell them this test does not have a digit larger than 10.

You are referring to the E51 Aptitude Test.

That is a good test which does a very good job of determining if someone thinks logically.

When I worked for NCR in Philadelphia in the early 60's, I was asked by the Univ. of Penns. to administer the test to prospective students for one of their advanced classes.

Yes, I do have a copy.

Just email me.

Jim

Jim sent me a copy, but he didn't have the answers and it's been over 40 years and I don't remember. So I have to ask, is there anyone out there who has them?

As I said earlier, I have a copy of the test and did send a copy to Jack.

However, I do not have a scanner and do not know how to put something on a web site for others to access anyway.

I have had a number of people request copies for themselves and I would like to help, but making copies and mailing them out all over the world is not something I want to get into.

Therefore, does anyone have a copy of the test and a way to upload it to somewhere so that it can be shared by the other "old coders"?

Jim,

If you can make a last “errand” to send by post a copy of the test to the owner of this Forum, Aleksandrs Guba, he may include it  in the Core Memory Site (http://www.thecorememory.com/index.html ).

I am sure that Aleksandrs will be happy to give you a postal address, and all of us will  also be happy to see again this test that made us sweat many years ago.

Best Regards

NEXUS:

jswallow (see above) has done just that.

He sent an electronic copy to Aleks who is going to convert it into the proper format and post it on this site.

Then everybody can reminice about how we looked at it and thought "This is impossible"?

Jim

It's not so complicated as it looks like,- believe me,- just pay enough attention to it.

Let's consider Example Nr.7.

The key is in Instruction 3 - "Is the second box number (i.e.1),- not a content of box number 1,- mentioned in Instruction 2, less than (number in box 6)?". This may be true only if number in box 6 is less then 1,- that means 0,- if we are using positive numbers.

That simple.

Good luck!
